Tree Removal & Tree Felling

img-tree-removal-1

It would be great if trees never needed to be removed but unfortunately there are a number of reasons why sometimes they need to be, such as:

  • The Tree is dead or in decline
  • The Tree has too much rot, disease damage or fungi and is becoming unstable
  • The tree is damaging structures, buildings, utilities or paved areas.
  • The tree is obstructing a new proposed development
  • The tree is dropping large branches or is perceived as hazardous.
  • Storm Damage
  • Lighting struck

We have extensive experience in the safe dismantling and removal of all types of trees and palms. This includes dead and diseased trees or those which need to be replaced with more suitable species because of the damage they are causing or the potential dangers they present. Although we specialize in large, complex and dangerous trees we are equally efficient at removing any size tree in any location whether that is in an extremely confined space between 2 buildings or in the middle of a vacant block or park. There are many different techniques involved in this process and much of choice comes down to the size and location of the tree as well as the obstacles that are around it such as buildings and service wires.

Manual dismantling.

This is the most common method used since many trees can be safely dismantled using ropes, pulleys, and a lowering device known as a porta wrap or friction drum and a variety of rigging techniques. Through the teamwork of the climber and the ground crew controlling the ropes each limb or branch is carefully lowered to the ground cut up and carried away to be mulched with minimal impact to anything on the ground or surroundings. This is also often the only method available and the reason why we got into this game in the first place, for the love of climbing and the constant need of focus and strength that you don’t get with your everyday 9-5 job.

Our motto is with enough ropes and pulleys we can achieve anything.

Cranes

When removing particularly large or dangerous trees, or trees in an awkward location it is often more efficient and much safer to use a crane. This can be an expensive operation depending on the size of the crane but it is often compensated by the significant reduction in manpower and time required to remove the tree.

Obviously there needs to be access for the crane to get near the tree and subsequently there are a number of types typically ranging from 8 and 15 tonne all terrain mini cranes for tight access to large 50 and 80 ton cranes that generally stay on the road. Another advantage of using a crane is that the tree is lifted up and away from its location and then lowered elsewhere, often on the road, so there is no impact on the area surrounding the tree.

Cherry Pickers/Elevated platforms.

In some cases it is too dangerous (i.e. near power lines, dead tree) or time consuming (row of small trees to prune, deadwood) to climb a tree that needs removing or pruning. In this case an elevated platform or cherry picker can be used which allows the climber to get to exactly where he wants and carefully dismantle the tree in small hand held pieces. However, this method is often restricted by the access for the machinery itself.

Clear Felling.

tree6If there is a large space on one side of a tree, and no obstacles, then clear felling a tree from the ground is always another option and is generally the fastest method of removing a tree. At Treespecs ltd we use a variety of rigging techniques to make trees fall in directions they may not be leaning but it requires a high level of skill and experience to ensure this is always done safely.

Machine Assisted Felling.

On the bigger jobs the quickest and most effective way is often to bring in the big guns and use a 20 tonne excavator to help bring the trees down and process them as fast and safe as possible.

Whatever method we chose or suggest to our client for removing the tree you can be assured that all branches and wood will be completely removed from the site, the whole area cleaned and blown so that it will look as if we were never there. Except that there will be a tree missing!
